Dodge to Offer 2014 Dodge Durango Police Vehicles

New Police Vehicles

Dodge has announced that it will make a 2014 Dodge Durango police edition for use in police and fire stations across America. The Special Service Vehicle version (or Durango) is the newest addition to the fleet of police and fire departments. It will soon be available for department use.

It is not a chase vehicle and is therefore not the primary ride for officers. It doesn’t have the right chassis tuning to handle high speed chases. And SUVs aren’t designed for high-speed driving or intercepting. Ford’s Explorer SUV has been rated pursuit-rated, while Chevrolet’s Chevy Tahoe SUV is rated pursuit-rated.

The Dodge Durango Special Service Vehicle, despite its pursuit rating, is nothing to be ashamed of. The SUV’s mid-size size will come with HD brakes and HD batteries, an engine oil cooler, high flow water pump, and engine oil cooler — this is to offset the long idle periods and constant running that are common in fleet use, as well as so the vehicle can handle additional communication gear.

Durango’s special model will include the standard 3.6L Pentastar v6 engine with 290 HP/260 lbs-ft of torque rating. It’s also rated at up to 25mpg and can get up to 600 mi on a single tank of fuel. Optional 5.7L Hemi V8 will be available. It has 360 HP/390 lbs-ft torque and towing capacity of 7,400 pounds.

Although there has not been any comment on the availability of EcoDiesels in Durangos, it seems like a natural option for police and fire trucks. The EcoDiesel will be featured in the 1500 Ram. It has 420 lbs-ft torque, 25 highway mpg and can tow 9,200 lbs. So it seems more appropriate that it should be available for Durango.

What other police vehicles are in use?

Ford’s Taurus has the EcoBoost V6 engine, which is well-known for its exceptional acceleration. Chevy’s Impala police car is being sold in Australia with the Caprice badge, rear-wheel drive platform and rear-wheel drive.

Chrysler’s rear-wheel Dodge Charger Pursuit With Hemi V8 is an efficient part of many agencies across the nation; the automaker also offers agencies a Ram pickup with steroids.

This means that departments you rely on to respond in an emergency are becoming more efficient in meeting the needs of citizens they serve. This also means that the cop cars in your rearview mirror are equally impressive and intimidating.
